Basic Information:

The 30 Hour Famine is a World Vision charity program that allows young people to make a significant impact on the problem of world hunger while growing closer to God and to each other.  By going without food for 30 hours, we will raise funds and gain an understanding of how it feels to experience hunger.

We will gather on Saturday, May 15th at 10:00 in the morning.  Each youth should eat a hearty breakfast at home prior to coming to the church.  From that point forward we will not eat until Sunday, May 16th at 4:00 PM when we will share dinner together.  Water and juice will be available.  Please bring $10.00 to cover the cost of dinner, juice, supples etc.  If during the 30 hours anyone feels that they can’t continue they will be allowed food and can continue with activities if they desire.

We will be constructing makeshift cardboard shelters on Saturday afternoon.  The youth along with adult supervision will be sleeping out in their cardboard shelters on Saturday night.  Youth are encouraged to bring cardboard with them but anything they bring they need to take home on Sunday!

During our famine we will be collecting cans of food to donate to local food banks.  We will leave the church premises with RA supervision and go door to door within Cheshire to ask for donations.  We will also be going out in groups no less than 3 and standing on various street corners throughout town to hand out information and collect funds for World Vision.

This is also a fund raising event for World Vision.  YUTES have been encouraged to ask for donations from family and friends.  Collecting money is not mandatory to participate in the famine.  There is a packet from World Vision that contains receipts and information.  All collected money needs to be turned in when YUTES arrive on Saturday morning.

What to bring:
CHURCH AND FAMINE PERMISSION SLIP (mandatory)
$10.00 to cover costs
Lunch for Saturday
Your 30 Hour collection kit and monies collected
Roll of Duct Tape and Markers for buiding shelter

Cardboard for shelter/tarp for ground - what you bring you bring home on Sunday
Sleeping Bag (with pad - the floor is hard) and pillow
Games to share
Small flashlight
Dorm sweats / overnight clothes

Church clothes for Sunday
Toothbrush, toothpaste and other toiletries

What NOT to bring:
Please do not bring pocket knives, gum, candy or food.   In order to fully appreciate the famine experience we ask that youth do not bring electronic and handheld devices like radios,  CD players, DVD players, beepers, laptops, portable stereos, and video games.  You may bring a cell phone but limit use to contact family etc.  MP3/Ipods will be allowed ONLY while youth are in their shelters getting ready for bed.

This should go without saying but we need to say it:   Do not bring any alcohol, tobacco, drugs, weapons, firecrackers or other dangerous items.  Anyone caught in violation of this policy will have their parents pick them up at once and will forfeit the opportunity to attend future retreats and the Mission Trip.
